Unpopular Boundaries: Social Media

When was the last time you checked out your social media usage? Would you be embarrassed to admit how long you spend scrolling?

In April 2023, I opted to take a “Facebook Vacation.” I had taken several small breaks for various reasons over the years, but I never lasted long. I needed to know what was going on!

So, when I decided to delete my account, there was no guarantee it would even last the full day, but I somehow managed to stay off Facebook for a full two years. The longer I was away from it, the less I missed it. (It was definitely an addiction.)

I noticed I had time for activities I enjoyed, such as reading, writing, gardening, and actually watching television, rather than just using it as background noise.

I hadn’t realized how much Facebook was controlling life.

I also had no idea what was going on in the world, and it wasn't even so bad. I missed yard sales, but I survived.

Facebook has become our primary source of communication. Even when I’m watching the local news, they report on situations based on social media posts! Very strange...

In February, I started writing a blog and was trying to figure out, how do you let people know you are here? The Internet is full of writers with powerful messages and talent. How do you showcase yours?

So I returned to Facebook.

I managed to last about a week. It turns out, Facebook is way too stimulating for me. It was robbing me of my peace! I love the silence. I’m sitting here now listening to birds and oblivious to what hundreds of my friends from high school are up to today. No offense. I love you all, but I’m good with not knowing your updates. We’ll catch up at the reunion.

Today, I am fully engaged in the present moment. I’m not concerned about making a perfect impression or putting my best foot forward. (According to my daughter, both of my feet are equally unattractive anyway...Gotta keep my “dogs” covered, I’m told.)

Setting boundaries is an essential aspect of self-care for me. Even if it means that I’m not advertising my blog or seeking visibility. My values regarding leisure and family time have significantly improved since I save time not scrolling through Facebook.

This is probably a less popular boundary, but if you notice yourself feeling over-stimulated or losing hours on Facebook, then give it a try. See how long it takes before you stop missing and craving it.

Challenge:

  • Take a moment to view your social media usage on your phone.
  • How much time do you spend on social media each day? Each week?
  • Reflect on whether this affects your life, productivity, or core values.
